Plumbing questions, answered plainly

1000+ five-star reviews

Most homeowners should never need to learn the plumbing trade's language. This page gathers the questions we hear most often, answered in ordinary words.

What things cost, what happens when you call, and why the pipes here behave the way they do. If your answer is not below, the fastest route is a phone call, and the full picture of who we are sits on the Waitara home page.

Pricing and the process

How much does a plumber cost?

Every job gets a fixed written price before work begins, and the call out costs $0, so the only number you ever approve is the one printed on the quote. That holds whether the job is a washer or a wall full of pipework. If the price does not work for you, you owe us nothing.

Do you charge extra for nights or weekends?

There are no overtime rates here, so a public holiday call is priced exactly the same way as a weekday morning, and the quote shows it before we start. Weekend work is common in this trade and we see no reason to penalise it. The number on paper is the number on the invoice.

How does a job actually run?

You call, a licensed plumber answers and tells you what it likely means. We arrive when we said we would, diagnose properly, and only start once you approve the written price. Work is then tested and backed by our Lifetime Labour Warranty. The contact page has the details, and about us covers the team.

Emergencies and urgent work

How quickly can you get to me?

The van reaching you has usually just finished a job nearby, and real humans answer the phone around the clock, so we head out once your job is confirmed. If water is actively spreading, ask for the emergency plumbing team when you call. We work the suburb and the wider Hornsby district day and night, public holidays included.

What counts as a plumbing emergency?

Water spreading through a wall, a toilet overflowing, the smell of gas or a tank leaking through a ceiling all count, and each has its own guide with make-safe steps. We keep dedicated pages for toilets overflowing, no hot water and gas leaks, each opening with the first moves to make while you wait.

Services and this suburb's pipes

Why do drains on the older ridge streets keep blocking?

Mature trees along the leafy older streets push roots into jointed clay and earthenware sewer lines, which is the most common blockage this suburb produces. Sloping blocks on the ridge channel runoff hard into the lower runs as well. The blocked drains page covers clearing options, and a camera inspection settles repeat offenders.

Why has my water pressure dropped over the years?

Galvanised steel supply pipes in the pre-war and mid-century houses corrode internally across decades, narrowing the bore until flow fades and the water runs discoloured. We assess what the run genuinely needs rather than selling a new fitting that will not fix it. The burst pipes page covers repair and repipe paths.

Is it better to repair a hot water system or replace it?

We test the element, thermostat, valves and cylinder first, then tell you honestly which way to go, because a tired tank near end of life is rarely worth chasing. Start at hot water repair or replacement for how we decide, or compare gas, electric and instant systems.

Can you work in the apartment buildings near the station?

Yes, and regularly. The unit towers around the railway precinct bring their own challenges, from burst flexi hoses to shared drainage lines and building access requirements. For the common unit jobs, bathroom plumbing and kitchen plumbing cover the details, including the flexi connectors behind vanities that fail without warning.

When would I need a camera inspection of my drains?

Any drain that blocks repeatedly, any suspected crack under the yard and any pre-purchase check on an older house are all situations where evidence beats guesswork. The camera travels the full run while we watch live, and you get the footage and a plain-English report. Our CCTV inspections page explains what we look for.

Do you offer maintenance visits or only repairs?

Planned maintenance is a core service here, covering annual check-ups, tap washers, valve servicing and the small jobs that stop the big ones from ever starting. For the wider general trade, leak detection, backflow testing and water filters round out what we carry on the van.

Coverage and credentials

Which areas do you cover?

We service the suburb itself and the surrounding Hornsby district, including Hornsby, Wahroonga, Normanhurst, Asquith and Mount Colah, each with its own local page. Dedicated pages live at Hornsby, Wahroonga, Normanhurst, Asquith and Mount Colah. Just outside those? Call anyway and we will tell you honestly whether we can help.

Are your plumbers licensed and insured?

Every plumber on the team works under licence #275278C with full insurance, and the compliance certificates protecting your paperwork arrive with the invoice every time. That matters most on gas work and anything touching Sydney Water assets. Our work is service-area based: we come to you, with no premises you need to visit.

What if my question is not here?

Ask us on the phone and we will answer it plainly, with no obligation attached. The quote costs nothing and the advice comes from a licensed plumber, so the worst outcome is you hang up knowing a little more than you did.
